Biography

Professor Murat Arsel is Lecturer in Environment and Sustainable Development at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS), of the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. His research interests lie broadly in the areas of political economy and social theory, particularly regarding the interface between capitalism and nature-society relationships in rapidly developing societies. In this perspective, his work focuses on natural resource management and sustainable rural development in rapidly industrializing nations in the Middle East (especially Turkey) and Central Asia. Murat Arsel is the author of Water, Environmental Security and Sustainable Rural Development: Conflict and Cooperation in Central Eurasia (Routledge, 2009), Environmentalism in Turkey: Between Democracy and Development? (Ashgate, 2005), Reflexive developmentalism?
