Biography

Jan Pronk is a familiar name in Dutch politics as well as in UN circles. A politician and diplomat, Jan Pronk has served four terms as a Minister in the Dutch government, particularly in the field of Development Cooperation before turning towards the international scene and the United Nations. With a previous experience in the international organization in 1985 when he held the position of Assistant UN Secretary General, he was named in 2002 UN Special envoy to the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Tokyo. Two years later UN Secretary General Kofi Annan appointed him as the first UN Special Representative for Sudan. He holds at this time the position of Professor of Theory and Practice of International Development at the International Institute of Social The Hague.
