Biography

Erkki Liikanen, a graduate of the Master of Arts in International Politics at CERIS, was the first Finnish ambassador to the European Union and the first Finnish member of the European Commission, after Finland joined the EU. He was elected as a Member of the Finnish Parliament when he was only twenty-one years old. Liikanen experienced a steady rise in Finnish politics both within its political party where he took the position of Secretary General of the Finnish Social Democratic Party, and in the Finish government where he was appointed Minister of Finance. Currently he is the Governor of the Bank of Finland and member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank, as well as Governor of the International Monetary Fund for Finland.
